Our Foundation was founded in 1982 as the Juan de Fuca Hospitals Foundation and, at that time, we supported 4 extended care facilities – Glengarry, Aberdeen, Mt. Tolmie and Priory. These facilities were collectively known as the Juan de Fuca Hospitals – hence our original name. In 1999 Heritage Woods was welcomed into our family of support and in 2007 we welcomed Oak Bay Lodge.
In addition to care facilities, it was apparent that there were valuable community programs that needed our support too, so we started fundraising to support programs that would enhance quality of life for seniors and their family caregivers in the community. Today we support: Community Bathing Programs at the Priory site and the Hillside Seniors Health Centre; the West Shore Adult Day Program; the Oak Bay Lodge Day Program; the Mobile Adult Day Program; the Piercy Respite Hotel; the Yakimovich Wellness Centre, and the SAFE Lifeline Program.
In 2001 we changed our name to the Eldercare Foundation and expanded our mandate to reach further. Our aim is to generally support care of the elderly by seeking partnership and collaborative opportunities with senior-serving agencies, groups and organizations that also aim to enhance quality of life for seniors and those who care for them.
In the 1980’s, thanks to a generous bequest, an endowment fund was established for a research award. This launched our education and research awards program which today includes a variety of awards and bursaries to help professional caregivers and post-secondary students with education and research opportunities in the field of care for the elderly.
In March 2006 Embrace Aging Month was launched. March’s annual Embrace Aging initiative raises awareness and connects people to the wealth of resources and opportunities available year-round to help them navigate the journey of aging. As we work to expand this initiative throughout BC, our aim is to ensure that all British Columbians have access to the supports and services they need, when they need them, no matter where they live or what their circumstance.
