Eldercare’s HCA Award winner plans to further education

“Working in healthcare with seniors has been a dream of mine since I was young,” says Mary England. She is a recent graduate of the Health Care Aid (HCA) program at Camosun College and a recipient of Eldercare Foundation’s 2023 HCA Student Award.

When Mary’s grandfather was in extended care, she witnessed first-hand the importance of seniors receiving excellent care. “The support and kindness that my grandfather – and my whole family – received was a key factor in my decision into enter this field,” she says.

Mary is now a full-time HCA at Saanich Peninsula Hospital’s Extended Care Unit. “I am rewarded daily by the interactions I have with residents,” she says. “I recognize the value in listening to them and advocating for them when they are not able.”

Mary’s goal is to further her education with a nursing degree and continue working in extended care as an LPN or RN one day. “I was thrilled to be selected for this generous award, which I will apply towards more schooling. I am so grateful to the Eldercare Foundation for this honour.”
