Eldercare’s staff lottery player sees donations in action

Allison Patterson, a LTC (long-term care) Therapy Practice Resource at Island Health, has been playing Eldercare’s Payday Lottery for Island Health staff since 2007. It took 15 years before she ever won the jackpot.

“I thought I would never win,” she says with a chuckle. Her loyalty finally paid off and now luck is on her side. In 2022, she won her first lotto prize, and she has won several times since!

“The work of healthcare foundations is so important,” says Allison. “Most people are aware of fundraising programs for critical areas like a neonatal ICU or cardiac surgery. While these are certainly worthy causes, I have always wanted to help make the lives of seniors better. That’s why I’ve supported Eldercare for so long.”

As a lotto participant and a regular donor through our payroll giving program Allison says she gets to see her donations in action every day in long-term care. “Whether it is a wheelchair cushion to avoid pressure sores, a robotic pet companion, a group or individual session of music therapy, or an ice cream truck event on a hot summer day – these events and equipment improve lives.”

“I also appreciate that residents with limited funds for self-care items or clothing are supported. The Resident-in-Need Fund initiative has been so helpful for the dignity and care of our residents.”

Allison’s commitment to seniors’ health is evident – this year marks 30 years of dedicated service at Island Health. “I consider it an honour to support adults at this stage of life,” she says. “I often refer to it as rehabilitation in reverse – supporting function and independence while there is decline happening.”

Contributing to Eldercare Foundation is also personal for Allison. “I have made a few donations in memory of my dad. Eldercare will send a letter to my mom acknowledging the gift made in his name. It is meaningful to my mom, and it benefits our long-term care residents. That is a win-win for me.”

“That staff contribute their own money to help improve care for residents speaks to how deeply they care,” says Tom Arnold, Executive Director, Eldercare Foundation. “Thank you to everyone who supports our mission to enhance care, comfort, and quality of life to ensure seniors age with dignity.”
