We extend our thanks to the incredible donors who enabled Eldercare to purchase new busses for local long-term care and adult day programs this year.
These accessible buses have flip-up seats to easily create more space for residents with wheelchairs, attachments to secure wheelchairs safely, and a front entry ramp so that residents no longer need to gather near the bus’ exhaust to access a traditional back-door bus lift.
“The ability to offer bus outings is so important to residents’ overall quality of life, says Denese Alexander, a recreation therapist at Glengarry care home. “It gives them something to look forward to and a chance to get off the unit and experience the community they live in.”
“I enjoy the scenery, the mountains, the boats, and the flowers,” says resident, Grant. “I love going out on the bus outings,” says another resident, Gwyn. “It’s so good to get out in the fresh air.”
The busses are in service almost daily and give long-term care residents and adult day program participants a chance to enjoy outings across the city to take in ocean views, gardens in bloom, and even the occasional deer or other wildlife. Residents at Aberdeen, Glengarry, and Summit, as well as the clients at the Summit Adult Day Program are delighted. “I like to get out and see places around town that I have seen before,” says Artie, a Glengarry resident.
“The bus outings help to promote social engagement, reduce loneliness, and improve cognition,” says Denese. “Seeing familiar sites can provide a lot of comfort. Sometimes residents even get to enjoy their favourite treats again, like ice cream from Beacon Drive-In!”
Our deep gratitude to the donors who have made these outings possible for local seniors in need. Check out this short video from an outing – the joy from both residents and staff is palpable. That is thanks to the generosity of our donors!
