Thank you for helping local seniors maintain their mental health and cognition
Constant boredom is bad for your brain. Like any muscle, our brain needs stimulation to maintain its abilities. Without it, feelings of loneliness and anxiety, and a decreasing quality of sleep is common.
Unfortunately, this is exactly the situation faced by hundreds of local seniors in long-term care.
Long-term care in BC costs 80% of a senior’s after-tax income. With the 20% that remains, seniors must pay for their clothes, personal health care, glasses, hearing aids, and entertainment. The result is that many can’t afford things that the rest of us take for granted everyday, including books and newspapers.
Further complicating matters is that many seniors have special needs—large-type books and subscriptions to audiobook services to overcome vision impairments—and these are both more expensive and harder to acquire than visiting a second-hand bookshop.
